The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust is bringing the design of the UK’s most powerful passenger steam locomotive to life. Built for traction over speed, the locomotive is expected to haul in excess of 600 tonnes through the steep railways of Scotland and we have been brought in to help improve overall performance.

Cylinder Block Redesign

We used our in-house CAD and geometry clean-up expertise to rapidly develop a CFD model from the customer’s own CAD files. This enabled our analysts to promptly assess potential performance improvements associated with the cylinder block.

Improving Efficiency & Power

The cylinder block has been refined with overall efficiency and power in mind. We helped confirm to the customer that the flow through the cylinder block passages was as unrestricted as possible, in order to maximise the tractive power that could be extracted from the steam.

Short Programme Time Scales

The timescales for the programme meant that a very quick result was needed. We presented results to the customer in a series of progress meetings throughout the course of the project, keeping the communications flowing so that the customer could react to the results as early as possible.
