Welcome to Frewer Engineering’s Latest News January 2021

The headline for this issue is the roll out of our new website which has just been launched, please do check it out for a more in depth update on our capabilities.

This issue also reports on what’s keeping us busy!

CFD & Advanced Analysis

We have been continuing our analysis in support of the heritage new build of Sir Nigel Gresley’s P2 ‘Mikado’ – 2007 Prince of Wales. We have been building up some CFD models of the cylinder block, looking at flow through the steam and exhaust passages and through the valves.

This analysis allows us to ensure that flow restrictions have been minimised, thus maximising the power that can be extracted from the steam. Look out for further results from this unique project in the coming year and Click here for more details.

Combustion Research Equipment

Frewer Engineering are world-class suppliers of Hot Rigs design and analysis, offering specialist services to our customers in the Aerospace and Nuclear sectors. Large parts of such rigs operate at temperatures above the melting temperature of the materials and so must be protected by refractory materials, exotic alloys and heat shields, as well as water-cooling and air-cooling circuits.

Our hand-in-glove approach to design and analysis makes these rigs possible, seamlessly combining innovative design with cutting-edge aerothermal and structural assessments, to yield designs which are more compact and more efficient than ever before.

Our advanced engineering team are currently working in the area of turbine performance modelling. We are developing a software tool for our customer that will enable them to model different types and sizes of turbines to facilitate concept design evaluation. Customer concepts can then be evaluated under various performance parameters and a preffered configuration can be selected to move forward into detail design.

Our New Team Member Jack

On Monday of this week we welcomed Jack Mulligan to our team. We are continuing to expand our team to meet growing client requirements. Jack will be assisting Chris Brown in the field of advanced CAD design having recently graduated from the university of Southampton with an MEng in Aerospace Engineering. Jack is shown here sporting, as he describes it, a lock down haircut!

Jack has previous experience of hot nozzles and high temperature equipment design and, more importantly, brings knowledge of bipropellant rocket motor design and testing to the team.

Advanced Composites

Our advanced composites team are designing novel solutions to incorporate air sealing in carbon composite structures for aero engine applications, along with designing light weight but highly loaded structures. The team are also working on the design and structural analysis of submarine masts which are extremely complex structures that see very high loads in service.

In 2020, the team were heavily involved in the design of carbon composite intakes. These intakes are used in the ground testing and development of future gas turbine engines for the aerospace industry. Some of the composite design team’s experience goes back many years in the field of aero-engine intake design for both development testing and flight! Dealing with complex intake shapes that are non symmetrical and containing acoustic liners to assist with air presentation to the fan system.

As they start 2021 the team will be trialling the use of a new software tool, MSC APEX, for 3D CAD model clean up and composite structure modelling, we will report more on this in later newsletters.

Business Update

Over the past couple of months our sales and marketing team has been busy developing a new and improved website for our customers. The site is, we hope, much clearer to use and with a simple but effective layout.

The update captures the three divisions that we now run in the business. Click on the buttons below to visit the pages dedicated to each division:
