CFRP Hang Glider Batten Design and Analysis

Frewer Engineering designed a bespoke Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) spring batten for a sports hang-glider. The device formed a lightweight pre‑loaded spring arrangement towards the trailing edge of the hang-glider sail, to improve the trade-off between manoeuvrability and glide efficiency which typically exists in hang-glider design. The batten had very specific requirements for low weight, loaded and unloaded curved shape, and variable bending stiffness along its length.

Design and analysis services were provided to a client requiring optimisation of a structure that supports highly accurate scientific equipment. The current design was assessed against the client’s dynamic response targets, design changes were then recommended and implemented to achieve them. Our highly integrated design and analysis teams were able to iterate quickly through possible solutions and deliver the project in an efficient manner.
