This month’s edition provides an update on our three divisions, doing what we do best – providing world-class design and analysis engineering services.

We have been strengthening our contribution to the Nuclear sector over the last month. From design for ultra-high vacuum, through to knowledge of neutral beam-line components, graphite moderators and fuel canister impact assessments – our engineers are highly experienced in fission, fusion, commissioning of new-build reactors and life-extension of legacy plant. Our advanced fluid flow assessments help in contamination control, minimising dose to radiation workers to ALARP levels and even fire suppression system design and management.

We are the safe pair of hands required by industry to generate robust safety cases and support safe operation, from first concept, through to closure and decommissioning.

Marine Defence

Marine Equipment Design & Analysis
This business sector remains extremely buoyant! We are providing design and analysis services that enable our customers to reduce weight and improve submerged performance. Introducing composite materials to large structures in a hostile environment is key. Our large database of material data allows us to accurately predict in service performance. Aspects of particular importance include lifing analysis, shock loading, vibration and fluid force driven loadings.

New Staff

This last month sees four additions to our engineering team. Kristian, who is under a sponsorship with us, whilst studying aerospace engineering at Exeter University has returned for the summer. Two one year placement students join us from the University of Surrey, Harry and Chris, both studying their Masters Degrees. Cameron joins us for the summer as part of his studies at Bristol University. Cameron is currently studying for this Masters Degree in aerospace engineering.

Frewer Engineering is now Cyber Essentials Certified

Bespoke Analysis Tools
The last few weeks has seen our IT team working on achieving the cyber essentials certified status for all our IT equipment and operations. This provides a benefit to our customers in secure handling and storage of design & analysis data.

CFD & Advanced Analysis Division

Computational Fluid Dynamic modelling is highly active across three of our projects where we are supplying services to the defence, gas turbine and helicopter industries. Modelling complex flows along with complex assemblies makes this field a challenging body of work. We have recently invested in more token based software CFD tools. This allows more of our trained CFD analysts to access the modelling tools allowing us to resource our customer requirements.

Our analysis team remains busy working on future silicone chip making equipment for a USA based client (California). This involves modelling of vibrational effects on a very complex mechanical assembly. The vibration analysis includes the modelling of shock loading to simulate transport and accidental handling. This addresses the risk our client has of damage during transportation of the equipment to their site in California.

Advanced Engineering Division

This team is heavily involved with future air vehicle gas turbine engine development. Designing and modelling complex equipment to allow ground testing of engines is a key service to our customers. We are working closely with a number of manufacturers to provide a complete turn-key (design and make) service for our customers. Designing Air Intakes, Hot Nozzles and complex fabricated support structures is underway.

It is planned that some of these components will be manufactured from 3D CAD models only, with a minimum drawing definition. This is providing a cost saving to our clients in the form of reduced design effort.

Advanced Composites Division

Our composites team remain very busy in the field of light weighting – improving structural efficiency in both carbon and E-glass composite materials. This challenging area involves designing structures that are resistant to imposed aero/fluid loads, along with being capable of achieving lowest weight possible structures. Optimising lay-ups to achieve this and creating designs that can resist elevated temperatures in service is key.
